Crews Respond To Fire Near Bass Lake

BASS LAKE — Residents and visitors to Bass Lake this morning heard a helicopter working in the area, and were understandably concerned, considering the high fire danger.

Just after 9 a.m., reports came in of a smoke between Bass Lake and Central Camp.

Sierra National Forest crews had to hike in to the location, where they found a 10 x 20 foot ground fire and a single tree that had been struck by lightning.

A helicopter from Batterson Work Station used Bass Lake as a dipping spot, and effectively doused the fire. Fallers dropped the tree, crews had the fire contained by 11 a.m., and called it “out” at 12:10 p.m.

With the heavy lightning activity overnight, fire lookouts will be keeping a sharp eye out today.
