OAKHURST– The Marine Corps League (#1121) in Oakhurst together with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (#8743) will be hosting the annual Avenue of the Flags for Memorial Day, May 29th, at Oakhill Cemetery.
“We are seeking veterans and their families to help put up the flags at 07:30 a.m. and take them down at 5:00 p.m.,” said Maryann Enciso, the VFW Commander.
The event also will include Memorial Day Ceremonies conducted by Commander of the VFW, Post #8743, retired Chief Master Sergeant Maryann Enciso. These ceremonies are to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. The ceremony consists of a prayer by our Chaplin, a reading, and the placement of a flag on a veteran’s grave, followed by three rifle volleys and the playing of Taps.
This year we will have members of the California Cadet Corps participating in the events. Commander, CWO3 Suzy Shimonishi will lead the California Cadet Corps in the presentations. A special “thank you” to the Coarsegold 4-H Group. These amazing young boys and girls help us every year to put up the flags and take them down.
The public is invited to attend at any of the following locations.
The times and locations are as follows:
0900 The Indian Cemetery at the Wassama Round House in Ahwahnee.
1000 The Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst.
1100 The Picayune Cemetery above the Casino.
1300 The North Fork Cemetery.
“Our time-honored tradition is to put up the flags every Memorial Day to honor our fallen heroes, Enciso said. “We would like to continue this tradition for our community.”
