Church Fire Burning Behind Sierra Pines Church

OAKHURST — Just after 1:30 p.m. today crews were called to respond to reports of a fire burning behind Sierra Pines Church in the Oakhurst/Ahwahnee area, off of Highway 49 at the cross of Vista del Rio.

First engine on scene reported the fire at five acres with a moderate rate of spread. Structures out in front are threatened, and power lines pose a hazard. The fire is burning in grass, oak and woodland.

Reports are that resources are scarce due to the Ben Fire currently burning in Mariposa. In addition to the units called out with the original dispatch for the Church Fire at Sierra Pines, a total of four tankers have been ordered, with some diverted from the Ben Fire. Aircraft 5 is on scene and four additional water tenders were called out.

Just after 2 p.m. some air resources were being canceled for the Church Fire and returned to work the Ben Fire.

Engines from Cal Fire, Madera County Fire, and Sierra National Forest are on scene. Deputies from the Madera County Sheriff’s Office are going door to door to warn residents of the fire, however, no evacuations have been ordered at this time.

At 2:15 p.m. the fire was determined to be 5 to 10 acres with some hose lay around it. Highway 49 remains open at this time. Please drive slowly and watch for emergency vehicles.
