Grant was born in Playa Del Rey, CA, on September 11, 1927. A high school chemistry class marked a pivotal moment in his early life, where he met his lifelong companion, Gladys. After graduating from high school in 1945, the Navy drafted Grant and later supported his education in Flagstaff, AZ. This set him on the path to becoming an Officer and Naval Aviator. Following the end of World War II, he pursued further education at UC Berkeley. Here, he and Gladys would reunite and eventually marry in December 1951.
Grant’s career in education began after earning his bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1950, followed by a teaching credential in 1951, and a master’s degree while working as the Superintendent of North Fork Union Elementary School. He was a pioneering figure in California’s Indian Education Movement, working alongside notable figures like Jack Forbes and Marigold Linton.
In 1954, Grant and Gladys settled in North Fork, CA, beginning a lifelong commitment to the community. His work included facilitating short-term school district mergers in Fresno and Madera counties and developing significant educational and community institutions such as:
- North Fork Elementary School‘s upper campus
- North Fork Recreation Center
- Sierra Mono Museum
- Minarets High School
