OAKHURST—Sierra Tel’s roots date back to 1895, and it employs approximately 130 people. Our serving area consists of 775 square miles in Eastern Madera County and the southern region of Mariposa County. Ninety-nine percent of our infrastructure is buried in conduit underground, which drastically reduces the network’s susceptibility to fires and outages.
Our first fiber optic cable was placed into service in the late 1980s. We currently have over 750 route miles of fiber. We work diligently to place new fiber facilities to homes and businesses in our serving area. In addition, our network provides up to 100 Gigabits per second of service to anchor institutions, and we are the preferred local transport carrier for cellular service traffic.
We have been publishing a printed telephone book since approximately 1917. Each year, we give considerable thought to our cover, choosing a location, organization, landmark, or piece of history from within our serving area that we believe our customers will find interesting. We sometimes showcase lesser-known facets of our quaint communities and typically alternate between scenes in Mariposa and the Oakhurst area. Occasionally, we create a cover that applies to both communities with a shared interest.
This year, we created a cover that symbolizes our traditional roots with the forward-looking technology of tomorrow. We are proud of the fact that our copper roots and our fiber future allow us to connect our customers and small communities to the rest of the world for over 100 years – and the “Earth” on the front cover represents a collage of several of our past covers.
We hope you have enjoyed our directory covers and stories over the years as much as we have enjoyed creating them and sharing them with you.
