OAKHURST — A crowd of more than 100 family members and friends of Jeramy Smith Jr. and Danika Lee Ibbotson gathered at a candlelight vigil in Oakhurst last night to commemorate the teens’ passing. The vigil was held near the accident location, which occurred on Road 426 west of Road 427.
The young couple was riding in Jeramy’s BMW — which he was always extremely proud of — on the night of Sunday, May 8, when he tried to overtake a Honda Civic. The two cars collided, causing the BMW to go off the road and strike a tree.
Both were rushed to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) via Sierra Ambulance, but Jeramy died en route. Several days later, Danika also passed away. It was later determined that neither teen was wearing seatbelts.
The couple had just celebrated their one-year anniversary and Danika was scheduled to graduate high school soon.
Their dog Beamer, who was also in the car at the time of the accident, has survived.
