On March 7, 2023, Sheriff Tyson Pogue presented a proposal to ratify the local state of emergency for Madera County due to the significant impacts of the ongoing extreme weather conditions.

As our community knows, we have been hit with compounding storm systems, bringing record-breaking snowfall and hazardous conditions to our mountain areas. The ongoing storm system has resulted in evacuations, collapsed buildings, impassable roadways, power outages, and snow accumulations unlike any we have ever seen.

With the rain and increased temperatures projected in the coming days, there is now potential for snow melt and atmospheric river conditions, causing flooding, debris flow, and mudslides.

The extreme weather we’ve experienced has strained our local resources and necessitates an ongoing declaration of a local emergency in order to maintain our standard level of public protection to the county.
