Apply Now To Become A Seasonal Cal Fire Firefighter

CALIFORNIA — Cal Fire is now accepting applications for the position of Fire Fighter I – a seasonal, temporary classification used by Cal Fire.

Applications are accepted each year during a one-month filing period from Nov. 1 – 30.

As a member of a fire crew, a Fire Fighter I fights wildland, rural, and structural fires and responds to various other emergency situations including medical emergencies. Additional responsibilities include repairing equipment and general station housekeeping.

A Fire Fighter I is usually hired in April, May or June, and the length of employment may be up to nine months, depending on the duration and intensity of the fire season.

Being a Fire Fighter I can lead to a permanent career with Cal Fire.

Applications received after Nov. 30, 2017, may not be considered for the 2018 fire season.

Qualifications:

  • Age: Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to: Follow oral and written directions; do heavy physical work; exercise good judgment in hazardous fire suppression activity; accept and benefit from training in fire suppression work and techniques; work safely with others; live in a fire station compatibly with others; respond quickly to oral commands or signals in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of: Good physical work methods.

Applications must be filed at Southern Region Headquarters-Fresno office to be considered for employment. Walk-in applications will only be accepted during normal business hours throughout the filing period.
