A Theatrical Tradition in Oakhurst
Founded in 1967 as a community response to attract visitors to the south gateway of Yosemite, Golden Chain Theatre began with melodramas at the Oakhurst Community Center. As interest grew, organizers purchased and converted the former Snowline Bowling Alley into the theatre’s current home in the early 1970s. By 1999, the organization paid off its mortgage and secured ownership of the facility outright. Since then, it has continued to expand its repertoire — balancing summer melodrama with musicals, dramas, workshops and traveling shows, all while fostering arts education and cultural vitality in Eastern Madera County.
