YUSD Names Melinda Gresham Next Coarsegold Elementary School Principal

OAKHURST, CA — The Yosemite Unified School District announced the appointment of Melinda Gresham as the next principal of Coarsegold Elementary School, pending Board approval.

22-Year Resident of Coarsegold

Melinda Gresham is named new Principal of Coarsegold Elementary School

Gresham, a resident of Coarsegold for 22 years, brings 24 years of experience in education to her new role. Her career includes two years as vice principal of Yosemite High School and 17 years at Coarsegold Elementary/Gold Creek Academy.

She holds a master’s degree in teaching and learning along with an administration credential from Brandman University; a teaching credential from California State University, Bakersfield; and a bachelor’s degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Focus on Communication

During her tenure at Yosemite High School, Gresham focused on enhancing communication and fostering a positive school culture. She worked closely with students, families, and staff to create a safe and challenging learning environment. Her teaching career spans grades K-6.

Active Community Involvement

She has been actively involved in the Coarsegold community, including chairing Heritage Days and coordinating various local events.

Gresham began her teaching career in Bakersfield and Madera before joining Coarsegold Elementary. She served as the school’s athletic coordinator, coaching multiple sports including volleyball, basketball, soccer, track, and cross country. Additionally, she has coached youth soccer, softball, and little league in the mountain area.

In 2016, the Coarsegold Chamber of Commerce named Gresham the Coarsegold Woman of the Year.

Gresham says,

“I am eager to reconnect with the Coarsegold school community and continue our journey of fostering a positive school culture.”

She continued, “Emphasizing kindness, compassion, acceptance, and patience will be at the heart of our efforts. I look forward to collaborating with students, staff, and families to create a supportive and dynamic environment. Together, we will build a strong foundation for our future Badgers.”

Gresham’s Family

Gresham and her husband, Kent, have two children. Their daughter, a graduate of Yosemite High School, is in her third year at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, pursuing a degree in education. Their son is graduating from YHS this year and will also attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, majoring in construction management.

Assumes Principal Role at End of 2023-24 School Year

Pending board approval, Gresham will assume her principal role after the conclusion of the 2023-24 school year. The YUSD community looks forward to welcoming Gresham and witnessing the positive impact of her leadership at Coarsegold Elementary School.

Judi Hussain

Judi Hussain escaped from the big city to the wilds of eastern Madera County over thirty years ago. During her time here she’s worked at selling doors and windows, coordinated Road Scholar adventures at a local conference center and served as visitor center coordinator for Visit Yosemite Madera County. After the COVID shutdown upended her world, she "enjoyed" her first retirement months ever and couldn't wait to get back to work. When offered a position in January 2021 as the chamber administrator for Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce, she grabbed it and held on tight. Her diverse passions include hiking, beading, dog mushing (observer, not participant), travel, writing and languages. The shutdown offered an opportunity to expand on her journeys to Israel in 2016 and 2018, and she’s now studying Hebrew in preparation for a return to the land she uexpectedly grew to love. She’s investigating other travel prospects, as well, targeted toward the end of 2022.
