Yosemite Kicks Off Anniversary Celebration

YOSEMITE – With the backdrop of spectacular Yosemite Falls, a special ceremony in Yosemite National Park will kick off its 125th anniversary celebration.

Ranger Gabriel Lavan-Ying, who became an Honorary Park Ranger last summer through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, will make his first visit back to the park and will be appointed the Honorary Chairman for the park’s 125th anniversary.

Working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Yosemite National Park staff put Ranger Gabriel to work during a very special day last June, assisting with the types of situations a Park Ranger might deal with on any given day in the wide expanse of Yosemite.

Gabriel worked with the Yosemite Fire Crew to put out a wildland fire, went on a naturalist walk through Cook’s Meadow with a Park Ranger, worked on a search and rescue operation involving an injured hiker and assisted the Yosemite medical team in transporting the patient to a waiting helicopter.

Ranger Gabriel will now serve as Honorary Chairman as the park kicks off the anniversary celebration of the legislation that created Yosemite National Park, and was signed by President Benjamin Harrison in 1890.

This event will also feature over 300 students elementary school through high school from throughout northern California who will help the park realize the anniversary theme of Youth of Today: Park Stewards of Tomorrow.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Mar. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Yosemite Falls Viewing Area in Yosemite Valley.
