Yosemite High School Band Notes

YHS wins First Place in their class at the Visalia Invitational last month! After a thorough inspection by two Marines at the start of the parade, the band marched a short distance to perform in front of the judges. The competition is broken down into categories – Drum Major, Showmanship, ID Letters, Marching, Music and Percussion. These points are then totaled for the overall score in the competition.

The band will have another opportunity for a win at the Central California Band Review in Merced on Saturday, Nov. 9.

One of Merced’s biggest community events, this review is expected to draw more than 50 bands with about 10,000 people attending…wow, thinking we should leave early if we want a parking space.

VETERANS DAY PARADE ALERT!

This week, history was made in our mountain community when Mariposa, Minaret’s, Sierra and the YHS Bands formed the “Mountain Area Marching Band.”

The first rehearsal was Friday, Nov. 8 on the YHS track, they sounded and looked great!

A unified band has been a topic of discussion with band directors Bill Samuelson, Bruce Wienberger, Dr. Phil Smith, Rod Fiester, Pat Mierkey and Randy Hyatt for over a year.

Since the Veterans Day Parade is local and noncompetitive, it seemed like a great opportunity to give it a test run. Most of the students would never have the experience of marching in a band of this size at their individual schools and this gives them the opportunity to work together on a common goal.

Marching season is over, though the band will keep performing at various events over the next couple of months. Mountain Bowl, Tree Lighting’s (Coarsegold and Bass Lake), Articulation Program at Rivergold and Coarsegold Schools and the Winter Concert on December 5th are on the calendar so far. And don’t forget the Community Band performs their Fall Concert on Nov. 17 at Mountain Christian Center, starting at 3 p.m. Several of the YHS Band students are members of the Community Band as well!

This is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and as always for Community Band concerts, admission is free.
