Yosemite High Decathletes Bring Home Two Medals

SACRAMENTO — Yosemite High School students competed and medaled at the state Decathlon against nearly 600 decathletes from throughout California.

The Yosemite Team includes Olivia Mattos, Kelsey Montalto, Hannah Hurtado, Bryce Talbot, Alexia Dahlin, Burke Stewart, Emily Anderson, Dillon Doss.  Coach: Carole Calderwood

Bryce Talbot earned a silver medal in speech with a near perfect score. He competed in the Scholastic division earning him top ranks amongst more than 85 of the best decathletes in California.

Hannah Hurtado received a bronze medal in interview. She competed in the Honor division against more than 85 students.

California Academic Decathlon gives awards to the top scoring student on each team. Olivia Mattos received that honor.

“Receiving two medals at the state competition is amazing,” said Dianna Marsh, assistant superintendent, Madera County Superintendent of Schools.  “We couldn’t be more excited and proud of the students and their performance at the California Academic Decathlon.”

More than 600 students from 68 schools competed March 22-25 in Sacramento. Decathletes competed in art, economics, essay, interview, literature, math, music, science, social science and speech.  This year’s topic was Africa.
