YARTS provides year-round and peak summer transit service into Yosemite National Park from the gateway communities surrounding the park.

YARTS Offers Free Rides to College Students

MERCED – Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) is now offering free roundtrip passes to college and university students. The students must be traveling from Merced and Mariposa to Yosemite National Park. To obtain their ticket, individuals must submit a simple application along with proof of enrollment in a post secondary institution. College and university students who reside in Mariposa or Merced County and commute to their school via Highway 140 may also apply for a free 31-day commuter pass.

“We are excited to offer our first free-fare program to these hard-working, young adults who are looking to explore Yosemite,” said Serenity Anderson, Transit Director.

Serenity continues, “We know college students seek affordable travel options, as limited finances often put luxuries, like travel, out of reach, despite their desire for outdoor experiences remaining strong. This program offers them a convenient and practical solution to visit one of the most iconic National Parks in the country.”

Both the vouchers and commuter passes are available through December 31, 2025 or until all funds are expended. This program is paid for through a Low Carbon Transit Operations Program grant from the State of California.

Passengers riding into Yosemite on YARTS do not need a day-use pass issued by the National Park Service on days when one is required for those entering in private vehicles.

All YARTS buses are equipped with lavatories and provide ample undercarriage and overhead storage for personal items. Children under five are always free. Each child between the ages of 6 and 12 years-old ride free if accompanied by a full-fare paying adult.

Discounted rates for veterans, seniors and ADA passengers are also available.

YARTS is a California Joint Powers Authority comprised of the Counties of Merced, Mariposa, Tuolumne, Madera, Mono, and the City of Fresno in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, National Park Service and United States Forest Service. The Merced County Association of Governments provides administrative services and operational support for YARTS.
