What’s There To Do Around Here?

Oakhurst LibraryOAKHURST — Ever wondered what there is to do around the mountain area? Come to the Oakhurst Branch Library to hear Judi Hussain explain the plethora of activities this marvelous area has to offer.

Judi has been the Visitor Center Coordinator at Yosemite Sierra Visitor Center (now called Visit Yosemite | Madera County) for the past five years, and this weekend she’ll share her bank of knowledge with anyone who attends the free talk. Judi Hussain, makes it her “mission” to know what’s going on in the area.

Activities discussed will include Yosemite ranger walks and programs, star-gazing at Glacier Point, museums, wine trails, junior ranger activities, and more.  The mountain area is a wonderful place to live; visitors center and library organizers encourage people to come learn more how to enjoy mountain life to the fullest. Judi also covers things like where to hike or bike, where to find boating, fishing and swimming holes, where to take children, where Rover (the dog) can roam with you as well as tips and tricks for visiting Yosemite during the busy season.

The experienced fun-lover invites people to bring their questions for an “interactive session of learning that can lead to adventures of a lifetime – or a weekend.

“Every time I think I’ve heard the strangest question ever, another pops up that I’ve never dreamed of. But, it’s a challenge I welcome,” she added.

Judi promises that if she can’t answer a question on the spot, she’ll research it and get back to you.

Twenty-six years ago, Judi took a family vacation to Bass Lake for the first time, bought a house that weekend and moved to the area four months later. For 11 years, she coordinated Road Scholar programs for a local conference center where her love for Yosemite and the Sierra National Forest were nurtured.

In her spare time, Hussain hikes, creates beaded jewelry, writes and “avidly” follows dog sled racing in Alaska, “my second favorite place on Earth.” If you’re a visitor to the area or a long-time resident who rarely ventures far from your front door, you might want to know “what IS there to do around here?” besides the obvious trip to Yosemite.

Join in on Saturday, July 30, from 10:30 to a.m. to noon in the community room at the Oakhurst Branch Library. Questions? Call the library at (559) 683-4838.
