Warm-Hearted Locals Create Community Coat Rack

OAKHURST — It all started when area resident Barbara Liss saw a social media post about a community coat rack in Saranac Lake, New York. She then shared the post with our local area page on Facebook, asking if it would be possible to implement the idea in our community. People immediately stepped forward, offering suggestions to help bring the idea to life.

Several folks pointed her to the thrift store Cause 4 Paws, which provided the rack on which to hang the coats. Local business owner Colette Goga offered up a location–a spot right in front of Yosemite Wine Tails–easily accessible on the Highway 41 corridor. Coarsegold resident Kathy Zingrich contributed by making a beautiful hand-painted wood sign for the project.

Barbara brought some plastic hangers from home and populated the community coat rack with its first five sweaters, jackets, and coats. She then posted to the community that the project had begun and posts when it needs replenishing.

“There is no vetting or questions for recipients,” says Barbara. “If you need a coat take one, if you can spare a coat, leave one. ”

Since the rack was first opened a month ago, it has been emptied and replenished multiple times.

“This is something the whole community is making happen, and I’m glad it’s a success!”

To donate a sweater or jacket, please hang it on the rack outside of Yosemite Wine Tails at 40409 CA-41 in Oakhurst. Please do not drop off bags or any other clothing items, as they cannot be accommodated.
