OAKHURST – Every year the local Relay for Life committee gets together to plan a theme for the event, scheduled currently for Saturday, May 14. This time around, there’s a fun new twist:anyone who’s interested can easily vote online to decide the best theme.
For those who are unfamiliar, Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk sponsored primarily by the American Cancer Society. Teams of people camp out around a track, while members of each team take turns walking around the track to raise money for the cause. The event has been held both at Yosemite High School and Wasuma Elementary and, right now, organizers are deciding between the two locations, as well as a theme, and need your help.
“We are extending an invitation to the entire community to vote for our 2016 Relay theme,” says organizer Tami Michel. “We will be having our Relay For Life Kickoff on Monday, Jan 18 at 5:30 in the community room at Raley’s. We are encouraging all past team captains, survivors, participants or anyone who would like more information about Relay to come. We will be revealing our theme at that time and it’s super exciting.”
Relay for Life is a community event, says Tami, and the planning committee wants the whole community to participate in the survey.
It’s a quick three-question survey that also asks what location you prefer for the event, as the committee zeroes in on details that will undoubtably make this the greatest Relay, ever.
During Relay, food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camraderie, and it’s a family-friendly environment for all. Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time, but “it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave!”
