Coarsegold Man Killed in Head-On Collision on Hwy 41

OAKHURST — A Coarsegold man was killed Monday morning in a “head-on” collision with a dump truck on Highway 41.

The accident occurred after Alain Gerard, 74, a resident of Coarsegold, reportedly had some type of medical emergency while driving and veered into oncoming traffic near Road 420.

Gerard died at the scene of the accident, the Madera County Coroners’ Office confirmed.

The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. and involved Gerard’s Nissan pickup and a large commercial dump truck.

Gerard, traveling northbound on Highway 41, had some type of “medical” issue, CHP Public Information Officer Jason Bettiini confirmed. “His pickup veered into the oncoming lane and collided head on with the dump truck that was traveling southbound on Highway 41.”

Madera County Sheriff’s Office deputies provided CPR at the accident scene until CHP, CAL Fire and Sierra Ambulance units arrived.

Officer Bettini said Gerard’s wife was a passenger in the car and also suffered minor injuries. She was transported to a local hospital.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured in the collision, Bettini added.

Southbound Highway 41 remained closed until 1 p.m. Monday until the accident scene was processed and cleared by law enforcement officials.
