BASS LAKE — It’s official: The 2020 July 4 fireworks show at Bass Lake has been canceled.
After 24 hours of conflicting reports about whether the popular event will be allowed to take place this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bass Lake Chamber posted late Thursday on its Facebook page: “It’s with a lot of sadness that we’re announcing that this year’s 4th of July Fireworks are canceled.”
“This was a tough decision, one that took a lot of investigation and discussion, both internally and with the many regional partners we call upon annually to play key roles in making the event a success,” the post also stated. “But you can bet that the fireworks show will be back for 2021, bigger and better than ever!”
At a virtual Town Hall meeting held Wednesday, District 5 Supervisor Tom Wheeler and Madera County Undersheriff Tyson Pogue both said that while they would love to see the popular show take place, holding an event that draws thousands to Bass Lake amid the coronavirus pandemic would not be a good idea.
