Two Influenza Associated Deaths Confirmed in 2024-25 Season

FRESNO COUNTY — The Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH) has reported two influenza-related fatalities among seniors for the 2024-2025 flu season, prompting health officials to stress the importance of vaccinations. The deceased, both over the age of 65, represent the first recorded influenza-associated deaths in Fresno County this flu season.

Nationwide & Statewide Statistics

Nationally, influenza has been particularly severe this year, with 33 pediatric deaths and 2,011 senior deaths linked to the virus. In California alone, influenza has claimed 8 children and 208 individuals aged 65 and older. In response to the surge, FCDPH urges healthcare providers to get vaccinated or wear masks in their workspaces to protect both patients and themselves. This measure aims to reduce the spread during peak transmission times.

Prevention & Measures

Moreover, the health department recommends flu vaccination for everyone older than six months. Health officials especially recommend the flu vaccine for high-risk groups, including seniors, young children, pregnant women, and those with conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Anyone with respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, sneezing, nasal congestion, fevers, body aches) should stay home until the symptoms improve.

Additionally, health officials recommend that high-risk individuals consider testing for flu and COVID-19. If testing positive, contact your healthcare provider and ask about prescription medications, which work best when started right after symptoms begin.

Dr. Rais Vohra expressed condolences and emphasized the need for preventative measures.

“With respiratory infections circulating in our community this time of year, it is more important than ever for people to get a flu vaccine, as well as an updated COVID-19 vaccine and the RSV vaccine if you are eligible,” said Vohra.

Vaccination Information

As the flu season continues, the FCDPH Immunization Program remains active in providing vaccinations. Residents should contact their healthcare providers or the FCDPH for vaccination locations.

Dr. Vohra concluded, “Protect your loved ones, neighbors, and your community. Do your part – It is not too late to get your flu shot.”
