The Growing Connection Between Radio And Gardening

By Jeanne-Ann Pine —

I now wear two hats proudly. I have been involved with our local community radio, KRYZ for over three years and last May I graduated from the UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa. Both have been exceptional experiences. And somewhere along the way I was able to start a blend of these two interests and now they overlap regularly.

Two years ago, we started “Over the Garden Fence,” an interview show done on KRYZ with the UC Master Gardeners. Francoise Upton coordinates the show, Ron Iudice produces it and I get to develop questions around the assigned topics and conduct the interviews. We have tried to cover a broad range of topics that will interest local listeners. UC Master Gardeners choose the topic and I create the questions. Then we come together in the studio and record the show.

Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 5 p.m. on KRYZradio.org.

The shows play on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 5 p.m. I do most of the daytime music programming and love to hear from people with request for songs, so please email to kryzradio@gmail.com.

The UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County have people who are experts in growing tomatoes, California native plants and trees, orchards and firescaping, as well as, drought issues and pest control. We have propagation experts, bulb aficionados, butterfly and bird people. We try to have a topic that is current to the month the show is broadcast.

In the future we will have fall gardening, succession gardening so you can grow all year long, gifts from the garden and then — in the spring — we will talk about getting ready to plant and what to grow. We learn each season about what works in which areas of the county.

If listeners have questions that we don’t cover on a particular show, they are welcome to call the Master Gardener helpline at 209-966-7078. Our volunteers will research questions and contact the caller with answers. The helpline is staffed on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.

KRYZ is easy to listen to in town and about 10 miles out on 98.5 FM as well as online by going to KRYZradio.org. We also have a link to a streaming device on our website. KRYZ is a community station that wants to have local programming and is always looking for people who would like to participate.

Look for me in the garden with KRYZ tunes keeping me moving!
