Tables Set For Soroptimist Luncheon

OAKHURST — Members of the service group Soroptimist International of the Sierras invite the community to attend their Fall Soup & Salad Luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The annual event is held at the Oakhurst Community Center.

Advance tickets are $10 at Oakhurst Giftworks and from Soroptimist members; day-of tickets will be available at the door for $12.

The philanthropic group wants guests to “enjoy a relaxing lunch with friends,” according to organizers. The luncheon is set to include an array of delicious, homemade soups and a traditional salad bar with toppings galore. Rolls, beverage and dessert are also included with the meal.

The organization wishes to thank their corporate sponsors including Yosemite Brokerage, Mark Wallo Pump Service and Sierra Telephone.

The Sorpotimist International motto is “best for women,” and the mission statement reflects that: “To improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.

Sorpotimist organization supports Childrens Museum of the SierraProceeds from the luncheon benefit Soroptimist projects. In April the organization offered a free financial workshop for women and in June the group funded high school scholarships. The continued support of the Women’s Opportunity Award, a grant for furthering education, and the Violet Richardson award, given to a girl between the ages of 14-17 for her outstanding volunteer efforts.

Before school started this year, Soroptimists donated $500 toward purchasing backpacks and school supplies for elementary school children in the mountains, and donated $1,100 to the Children’s Museum of the Sierra to fund that organization’s very popular Summer Arts Program.

They remain dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls locally and throughout the world. The Soroptimists meet twice a month on Thursdays, for luncheon meetings.
