Sustainable Forestry Practices Discussed

MARIPOSA – Steve Brink, Forester with Calforests, will make a presentation to the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, Mar. 18, at 9 a.m. at the Mariposa County Government Center.

“Sustainable Forestry Practices for the Future” will be the subject of the presentation, and the public is invited to attend.

“Catastrophic fires are on the increase, and there are solutions if we act in time,” says Kevin Barry of the Sierra Nevada Human Rights Alliance. “Our forests are overgrown and unhealthy. Fire will happen and we can help reduce the intensity with good forestry practices.”

The Alliance says that aggressive vegetation reduction in the forests and in the lower elevation manzanita can dramatically reduce fire danger.

“Selective timber harvest and ladder fuel removal can also create jobs for the county’s residents. Reduced vegetation will create greater water yield for creeks, streams and ground water, and have a positive impact on wildlife habitat and true species protection.”

The Mariposa County Government Center is located at 5100 Bullion Street in Mariposa.
