Sweet Spring Days At Busy BGC

OAKHURST – A variety of exciting activities, an exterior Club remodel, and lots of fun contributed to an already very busy spring season at our local Boys & Girls Club in Oakhurst.

The beginning of the month kicked off our very first Club mural created by UC Merced graduate student Anna Calderon and the Yosemite Leadership Capstone Project for Social Change! It was painted in our garden and has been a year in planning! Some of our members were able to help out too, and it was a fantastic experience for them.

Thank you to the Oakhurst community for all your support of our very own BGG! Also a huge shout out and great job to our kids for getting out there to support their Club they love so much!

In mid March, the kids celebrated Mardi Gras making masks for arts and crafts, and had an endless basketball game outside to go with our freshly painted backboards and our new half court, “BGC Hands,” all painted by the staff who donated their time!

St. Patrick’s Day brought shamrock hearts and shapes out of different strips of paper, good times and lots of green!

Thank you to Cameron Whitaker and April Thompson for all your volunteer time and enthusiasm and helping to make the Club amazing! Also thank-you to the Lebovitz family for their generous support of new furniture for the Teen Room, as well as a much needed dump run.

A Fantastic Friday the 13th at the Oakhurst BGC brought a visit from Yosemite Park Ranger Christine Raines as well as a new piano!

BGC 12 for 12 TripRanger Chris taught the kids about our watershed, pollution, and the water cycle and they had a blast. After her visit, we were blessed and very lucky to receive a piano, donated from the Tackett Family (Board President Bob Macaulay helped us connect). Thank you for the donation and everyone that helped to move it on site. The kids love it, and have happy kid piano hands! If anyone is interested in teaching piano lessons feel free to give us a call at (559) 642-4600.

The third week of March brought National BGC Week celebrated by all BGC Clubs across the United States. The week was full of fun and costumes, with theme days including Monday-PJ Day, Tuesday-Crazy Hair Day, Wednesday-80’s Day, Thursday-Tie Dye Day, and Friday-Super Hero Day.

BGC BGC WeekA great Friday ending to the week brought a BBQ, Open House, Easter tree, and games. We played sack races, red light/green light, BGC trivia and cream pie splat, had a donut eating contest, got temporary tattoos, made bubbles, and had as much fun as the kids wanted! Since it was Super Hero Day, we had a number of “Bat Heroes” in attendance, as well as side walk chalk art, special visitors, and other fun.

The end of March and the start of April were full of outside arts & crafts, such as painting wooden art stakes for our newly gathered Garden Club as spring has sprung! We did lots of sports, featured Power Hour homework stars, and The “Big Help” National BGC Day.Our members spent the afternoon giving back to their community and cleaned up the Oakhurst Parkway Creek Trails around the Club.

  1. Peggy, the piano was donated by Julie and Lynn Fullmer. The piano was my mom’s and her name is Barbara Whitney. Could this information get corrected?
