MARIPOSA – Starting Wednesday, Aug. 13, Ethos Youth Center will host the first in a series of six slam poetry workshops taught by local poet Taj, from 6 – 8 p.m.
The workshop series is open to any youth, age 13 through 19, in the mountain community. Poets are free to write and read in any style and on any topic.
Slam poetry focuses on self expression and encourages a diversity of individuals to find their voice, according to Poetry Slam, the official non-profit organization charged with overseeing the international coalition of poetry slams.
Slam poetry can include a wide and inspirational range of poems, including those on social commentary, love, comic expression and personal confession, just to name a few.
According to their mission statement, nonprofit Ethos Youth Center “empowers diverse young people within the local community,” and organizers believe “each young person deserves the opportunity to be recognized as an individual, particpate fully in their community, and thrive in a place of creativity, security, and support.”
The first Poetry Slam workshop in the series facilitated by Taj will be held at Ethos Youth Center in Mariposa, located at 5079 Hwy 140, Suite B.
