Single-Vehicle Rollover On Highway 41 Near Broken Bit

COARSEGOLD — A Coarsegold woman was transported to a Valley hospital after a single-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 41 this morning.

Just after 9:30 a.m., reports came in to the CHP that a vehicle had left the roadway and overturned near the Broken Bit just north of Coarsegold.

An 82-year-old woman was northbound in a Chevy SUV, at a stated speed of 45 to 50 miles per hour when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off the right shoulder of the road, went over the embankment and came to rest on its roof about 20 feet down, up against several large trees.

Madera County Fire, Sierra Ambulance, CHP and sheriff’s deputies all responded to the scene. Even a Madera County Probation Officer who was passing by, stopped to assist.

The driver was evaluated by Sierra Ambulance personnel, and placed on a litter. Firefighters, EMS and deputies set up a low-angle rope system to assist in carrying her up the steep embankment to the waiting ambulance.

Caltrans responded to set up one-lane traffic control, as the woman was prepared for transport and her vehicle was pulled back up onto the roadway.

The driver was transported to a Valley hospital with complaints of pain.

The roadway was reopened at 10:30 a.m. and the accident is under investigation.
