Single Vehicle Crash On Road 200

NORTH FORK – A North Fork man escaped serious injury this morning when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and crashed off Road 200 into the thick brush.

David Welfield, 38, was eastbound about 1/2 mile east of Road 221 (Bass Fork Mini Mart) at about 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 21, when his Isuzu Rodeo drifted off the right shoulder and rolled about 30 feet down the embankment, crashing through dense live oak and manzanita, coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Welfield was evaluated by Sierra Ambulance personnel and declined transport for further treatment. He was suffering from various cuts and bruises and associated pain.

Madera County Fire Engine 11 responded, along with Cal Fire Engine 4275.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, according to CHP at the scene.

Road 200 was reduced to one-lane traffic control for over 90 minutes, and then a two-lane closure as the vehicle was hauled back up onto the roadway.
