OAKHURST — Time to play ball!
Registration for Sierra Mountain Little League (SMLL) baseball continues this week outside Big 5 Sporting Goods in Oakhurst; times vary.
On Tuesday Jan. 14, and Thursday Jan. 16, registration will be 4 – 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9 – 11 a.m.
SMLL is for kids ages 4-12. Children under age 7 can sign up regardless of skills, while kids age 7-12 must try out. To register, parents need to bring a birth certificate, proof of residency, and registration fee. The cost is from $75 to $95 depending on the age and number of children. Discounts are offered for families with more than one child.
“We strive for all players to reach an understanding of the game,” says parent Robin Ward, “and to appreciate the rules and follow them, on and off the ball field. We commit to make each child better than they are when they come in, and we want them to learn a healthy competitive spirit.”
All kids age 7-12 must try out for SMLL. “Even if you were on a majors team last year, you still must try out again this year,” says Ward. SMLL requests that kids be already in their baseball attire and ready to go at try outs.
Team managers, coaches and parents will want to note the “Big Al Clinic,” on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Immanuel High School. Managers and coaches will meet from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. while coaches and parents will meet from 1 – 4:30 p.m.
On Monday, Jan. 20, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day), organizers have planned a field and activities work day from 10 a.m. to noon. MLK Day is often considered to be a day of service and helping out at the ball field falls right in line with that plan.
Tryouts are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, at 9 a.m. for kids age 7 – 9, and 10 a.m. for kids age 10 – 12. Arrive early if your child is not yet registered. Pre-registration is preferred. Tryouts for all ages will also be held on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m.
“Please have your players checked in and warmed up before their tryout time,” Ward reminds. “Those who have not registered should arrive by 8 a.m.”
