Sheriff Seeks Public's Help Re: Ignition Of Carstens Fire

MARIPOSA – The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for any information about the unattended campfire that investigators believe may have started the 1,800+ acre Carstens fire in the Midpines/Jerseydale area.

The fire started on Sunday, June 16, just after 2 p.m., and has caused wide-spread closures and evacuations, with some 1,000 people being displaced from their homes.Officials are reporting that the fire started at the bottom of Plumbar Creek Road in Mariposa County, where an unattended campfire, not located in a designated area, was not fully extinguished.

In cooperation with the National Forest Service and Fire Investigators, anyone with information regarding the unattended campfire that is possibly related to the start of the Carstens Fire can phone the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office Anonymous Tip Line at 209-966-3476.

Cal Fire, the US Forest Service, California Highway Patrol, National Park Service, Mariposa County, Mariposa County Fire and the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office are all co-operating in efforts to help residents evacuate and protect life and property.

As of Tuesday, June 18 at 6 p.m., the Carstens Fire is 40% contained. The fire has burned 1,888 acres and no structures have been damaged.

There are still over 1,100 firefighters, 62 fire engines, 16 dozers and 30 law enforcement officers assigned to the incident.
