Sheriff’s Office Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting

MADERA COUNTY – The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, Mar. 1, at approximately 4:07 p.m.

Officers of the Chowchilla Police Department were involved in a motor vehicle pursuit that ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into a home in the area of South 3rd Street and Mariposa Avenue.

The occupants of the vehicle reportedly exited the vehicle and officers began to chase after them on foot. During the foot chase one of the suspects, Ricardo Castillo, 26, of Friant, was located hiding in the area and confronted by officers.

Castillo was reportedly armed with a knife and refused orders from officers to drop the knife. Castillo suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and leg. He was transported by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. No officers were injured during this incident.

The officers and dispatcher involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation – a standard procedure nationwide in all officer-involved shooting cases.

Pursuant to Chowchilla Police Department policy, the shooting is being investigated by an outside agency, in this case the Madera County Sheriff’s Office. If you have any information regarding this case, please contact the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at (559)675-7770.
