Sex Offender Tries Smuggling Pot Into Prison

MADERA COUNTY – A 41-year-old Michigan man is behind bars, accused of trying to smuggle marijuana into Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to CCWF Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, where William “Bill” Leroy Waltz of Burlington, MI, was being detained after corrections guards caught him with the contraband, says the Sheriff’s Office.

Wlliam Leroy WaltzDeputies discovered that Waltz, who recently married one of the CCWF inmates, is a sex offender and is wanted in Michigan for being out of compliance.

Waltz reportedly knew he was wanted in Michigan but since he now resides in California, he said he didn’t think it was necessary to register here. When asked if he had been apprised of the requirements of being a sex registrant, Waltz claimed it was so long ago that he forgot.

Waltz was booked into Madera County Department of Corrections where, the Sheriff’s Office says, he will have plenty of time to refresh his memory.

Bail is set at $25,000.
