Sex Offender Arrested For Indecent Exposure

MARIPOSA – A man who exposed himself in a Mariposa business several weeks ago has been located and taken into custody, according to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 31, a Mariposa area business owner reported to the Sheriff’s Office that a customer had exposed himself to her during a transaction inside the business.

The incident was reportedly witnessed by another employee, and though they had a description, deputies were not able to immediately identify the suspect.

On June 28, the man reportedly returned to the business. At that time, deputies continued their investigation and were able to identify the man as Gilbert Barrera, 51, a Merced County sex registrant.

The investigation revealed that Barrera has been registering in Merced County but has been residing in Mariposa County for at least a year, which is a violation of his registration requirements.

A search warrant was executed at his Mariposa residence where evidence was located to support his residency. Deputies also discovered a firearm and ammunition.

Barrera was arrested for violation of sex registration, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition. Barrera was processed into the Mariposa County Adult Detention Facility for the charges facing a $35,000 bond. Barrera has since bailed out.

The investigation into the exposure incident is ongoing.
