Second Mariposa Teen Dies After Highway 41 Crash

MARIPOSA – The small town of Mariposa is in mourning as another young woman succumbs to her injuries following a tragic head-on collision on Highway 41 on Saturday, Mar. 14.

The CHP continues their investigation into the crash in which a 70-year-old Los Banos man crossed over the center line in a Toyota Tundra pickup and collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla carrying three people from Mariposa.

Kayla Choi, 13, died from her injuries shortly after being transported from the scene, and Christina Jarrett, 19, has now passed away also. Penelope Choi, 48, who was driving the Toyota, remains hospitalized with major injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Tundra, Antonio Lopez, and his wife Isabel Ortiz, 65, suffered only minor to moderate injuries.

Officers do not know why the pickup crossed into oncoming traffic, but say that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
