My name is Fernando Portillo and I am the Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 314 out of Coarsegold. Our Pack is only a year old, but we have already provided services for over 35 boys ages 6 to 12 in our Mountain community.
Cub Scouting is an amazing program that teaches boys leadership, independence, physical fitness, camaraderie, and most of all, a heart for Community Service.
One of the highlights of Cub Scouting is the Pinewood Derby. This is a race where the boys build their cars from a block of wood while working together with a parent. They design it on their own and race it against many other boys their age. They learn planning skills, woodworking, strategy, and team building. Plus, it’s a lot of fun and a great event for the whole family!
Our Pack is having a Pinewood Derby Fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 2, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Coarsegold Community Center. It is open to all children, young and old, to build a car and come compete. There will be many different races in all categories, plus a silent auction and food and refreshments for sale, all in an effort to bring the community together and raise funds to support the Pack’s annual activities.
Our 1st annual Pinewood Derby Fundraiser is a great opportunity for community involvement and that is where you come in. We are looking for some community sponsors to assist with the hosts of the event. Your sponsorship will help provide the funds for the pinewood derby car kits, silent auction items, and the food that will be sold at the event.
The annual pinewood derby race is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting! As you may already know, Pinewood Derby cars are small wooden models that Cub scouts design and build with help from their families. The cars, powered by gravity, are raced down a track in “serious” competition!
Young or old, girl or boy, Scout or not – This is your opportunity to build a car and race it!

Purchase your Pinewood Derby Car Kit from Pack 314 at the following dates and locations:
Coarsegold Market – Saturday, Oct. 4, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Hillside Market in YLP – Saturday, Oct. 11, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Arrangements for car kit purchase and pick up may be possible. For more information, contact Fernando Portillo at (559) 905-0954 to arrange for a pick-up.
The cost to register and pick up your kit is $10 per entry, and the supplies are limited.
All racing rules will be available at the time of entry. All cars must pass weigh-in and inspection the day of the event, in order to race.
Ribbons and Trophies will be awarded for all racing divisions. Bring the whole family, race, enjoy some yummy food, and bid on some wonderful Silent Auction items.
All proceeds will benefit local Cub Scout Pack 314 so come on out, support Scouting and have a great time!
