Scammers Impersonating Sheriff's Office

MARIPOSA COUNTY – The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is warning all residence about a telephone scam being perpetrated against residents.

Scammers are using scrambling devices to change the phone number shown on the caller ID. In some cases, it is showing the Sheriff’s Office phone number which is 209-966-3615.

The scammers are identifying themselves as Sheriff’s Office personnel and using names of current staff members or those in other governmental agencies, stating they are attempting to collect a debt.

“We would like to remind everyone not to give personal information out over the phone,” say Sheriff Doug Binnewies. “The Sheriff’s Office will never contact you via the phone to collect a debt.”
