Scam Claims You Owe Unpaid Property Tax

MADERA COUNTY – If you’ve been contacted and threatened with losing your property in a tax auction, the County wants to hear from you.

Madera County Treasurer/Tax Collector Tracy Kennedy is warning residents about a scam being perpetrated on people by threatening homeowners with having their homes sold at auction.

“It has come to our attention that individuals are contacting Madera County property owners, claiming their property is scheduled to be sold at a tax auction on May 14,” says Kennedy. “These individuals are not affiliated with nor authorized by Madera County to contact property owners. If you are contacted by one of these individuals, do not provide them with any personal information or make any payments for alleged unpaid taxes; instead, please immediately contact either the Madera City Police at 559-675-4200 or the Madera County Sheriff’s office at 559-675-7770.

Kennedy says the Madera County Tax Collector will indeed be having a Tax Defaulted Land Sale online beginning on May 14, and continuing through May 17, though they have not yet advertised or determined the final number of parcels that will be offered for sale.

Once the parcel list is finalized, the interested parties may access the following website, http://www.madera-county.com/treasurer and select Online Tax Sale on the menu, to see if their parcel was included.

If you are concerned that your property is included in the upcoming tax sale, please call the Madera County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office at 559-675-7713.
