OAKHURST – Get your tails wagging and mark your calendars for some outstanding events put on by the Eastern Madera County SPCA (EMC SPCA) to support their candidate for Honorary Mayor of Oakhurst.
The EMC SPCA has participated in the annual race more often than any other organization, and this year Brian Gearhart is running on behalf of mountain area critters.
On Saturday, June 1, and again on June 15, the group will hold bake sales with delicious offerings at True Value Homecenter, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., so be sure to stop by and pick up some treats. Organized by Linda Chappel, the bake sales include gluten free foods and most items are only $1.
Save the date on Friday, June 28, for “An Evening of Whine and Noses,” hosted by Western Sierra Nursery, from 6 – 8 p.m. With live music by local musicians Larkspur, along with a raffle, human treats in the form of hors d’eouvres and no-host bar, the night is shaping up to be a major social event for area animal lovers. A donation is $10 per person goes towards Gearhart’s campaign, where $1 = 1 vote.

Established in 1990, the EMC SPCA is dedicated to ensuring the humane treatment of all animals and provides a safe and nurturing environment for unwanted, abandoned and mistreated pets until they can be placed in loving homes.
“Through proactive intervention, public education and public outreach, the EMC SPCA seeks to promote respect for all life by breaking the cycle of abuse, neglect and pet overpopulation in our community,” according to the EMC SPCA website.
The organization has been raising funds and has started work on a shelter located on Highway 49 across from Wasuma Elementary School in Ahwahnee. Recently they met all the requirements to expedite the process, receiving a conditional use permit from Madera County. Local architect Alan Hendry is working on the plans, expected to be ready later this year.
The EMC SPCA is a local, independent nonprofit organization not affiliated with any other SPCA or Humane Society, and is supported solely through private contributions.
