Memorial for Shania Costella near the scene of the accident

OAKHURST — A 16-year-old girl lost her life last night when the vehicle she was driving rolled into a creek along Road 426.

According to the Madera County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, the young woman has been identified as Shania Faith Costella.

The accident happened on Road 426 at China Creek, just before 11 p.m., west of Road 425B. Shania’s 17-year-old sister, who was a passenger in the vehicle, reportedly suffered only minor injuries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Shania’s memorial expenses with these words:

“Last night we lost this beautiful young woman. Shania Faith Costella passed away after arriving at the hospital following an auto accident that she and her sister Savannah were involved in. Her passing is both tragic and very unexpected. We are asking for financial support to help her family not stress over the memorial expenses as they begin to grieve. Shania or “Shanaynay” as Coach Andersen called her, will be terribly missed by not only her family, but by her basketball teammates at Yosemite High school and by her hundreds of friends she’s made over the years. We love our #30! We all will always remember your beautiful smile.

In Shania’s exact words, ‘Never take life for granted.’ She sure enjoyed life while she could.
