Relay For Life Gears Up For May 2017 Event

OAKHURST — Eastern Madera County’s Relay for Life organizers are excited to announce plans for their 2017 event,

The Relay for Life will take place on Saturday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Oak Creek Intermediate School in Oakhurst. The theme this year is “Musicals.”

“Partnering with the American Cancer Society, our local community of volunteers is doing this to remember those we have lost to cancer, honor the survivors of all types of cancers, along with their caregivers, and raise money to help eradicate cancer,” says long-time organizer Linda Maddox. Linda is the Survivor/ Caregiver Committee Co-Chair this year with Kathy McLane, and is also a team member on Ponderosa’s team, “The Insomniacs.”

The local Relay does not involve running (unless you want to!). The idea is to keep the track filled with people walking all day at their own pace. Some people walk one lap, others set challenges for themselves.

The Relay for Life will open with the Survivors walking the first lap, followed by a free breakfast for them.

“At sunset we honor those we have lost with the incredibly beautiful and emotional Luminaria Ceremony,” says Linda. “In between all the miles there are lots of smiles brought to you by teams formed of community members.”

The Relay for Life is free, and everyone is encouraged to bring the family for a really fun-filled day, with lots of activities, crazy costumes, chances to win some great prizes, and education about the different types of cancers.

Organizers need you! Teams, volunteers, cancer survivors (whether you are just diagnosed or are long past your treatments), caregivers, sponsors, donors, anyone looking for a day of fun and fundraising is encouraged to contact one of the local organizers for more information.
