Raymond-Knowles Leads The Way Back To School

RAYMOND — They’re back! Students at Raymond-Knowles School (RKS) started the 2017-2018 school year on Thursday, Aug. 10.

District Superintendent and Principal Michelle Townsend says it was a great day for everyone.

“We welcomed two new teachers this year: Mrs. Natasha Scrivner and Mrs. Eden Westergaard. The RKS family is looking forward to a fabulous school year.”

Their tagline? Create. Connect. Compete. Principal Townsend says that is the focus of everything they do.

“The beach ball was a getting to know you activity,” explains Mrs. Townsend, offering an example of creative connection. “The ball was tossed around the room and when a student caught the ball they read the prompt and answered the question.”

Prompts included, “what is your favorite birthday memory,” and “what is your favorite book?” Students answered getting to know you questions on Google Forms and gave input to their teachers on personal goals for the year.

Raymond-Knowles School is a single-school district located in the town of Raymond, situated in the Sierra foothills of Eastern Madera County. The district encompasses nearly 200 square miles of sparsely populated foothills. Fewer than 100 students are enrolled in grades kindergarten through eighth.

All of the RKS K-8 students have 1:1 devices, says Mrs. Townsend. RKS also has several classrooms set up with flexible seating for students to experience more choice and comfort during their school day.

“K and first grade have iPad minis and second through eighth graders have Chromebooks. All students have a Google account and create and submit assignments through Google Classroom, SeeSaw, and Edmodo. We truly are a twenty-first century school.

“Our little school is doing great things for students, families and the community with few resources. I am a very proud principal. I have great families and an amazing staff.”

Bus schedules, lunch menu and more are on RKS Facebook
