Police Search For Suspect Near YHS

OAKHURST – The search for a man who was trespassing and reportedly carrying a hatchet in the vicinity of Yosemite High School this morning caused concern among parents and residents.

Just before noon on Tuesday, May 12, sheriff’s deputies responded to a call that a male adult was on the property of a church near Road 426 and Hangtree Lane.

The man reportedly had a hatchet and was asked repeatedly to leave the church property, where he had no business being, but refused to do so.

Another caller then reported that the man was seen getting into a car and being driven away. When law enforcement pulled the car over, the man jumped out and ran into the neighborhood around Pierce Drive, just south of School Road (Road 427). There was no hatchet found in the vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

CHP was called in to assist in the search, including CHP helicopter H40, but they were unable to locate the suspect.

Though social media was buzzing with rumors, there was no lock-down at the YHS campus, and was never any threat to students or staff, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
