OAKHURST – Sign-ups are underway for Sierra Mountain Little League, this Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Jan. 15, 17 & 19 at the CoolBean/Pizza Factory patio.
Anyone with children between the ages of 4 -12 is encouraged to sign them up, no matter their skills. There are teams for kids of all skill levels, and this is a great way to build confidence, make new friends and learn to work as a team. And it’s fun!To register their child, parents will need a birth certificate, proof of residency and registration fee. Registration cost is $75 for ages 4-8, and $95 for ages 9-12.
Discounts are offered for families with more than one child, and this year the league is offering a referral program as a way to involve more children in the league, and save some families a little bit of money on their registration. The referral program information is available at the sign-ups.
League president Michele Asten says there are some big projects in the works before the season starts, including new uniforms and face-lifts for the fields.
“Our opening day is March 9th,” says Asten. “We will have game booths, good food, Parker of the Fresno Grizzlies will be there, and there will be an exhibition game to watch after opening ceremonies.”
Asten says they are also offering clinics for ages 7-12, “to get the kids excited and ready for baseball season.” Clinics will be held the week of Jan 21 – 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Little League fields. This year all children will be required to try out. Try outs will be held over two Saturdays, Jan. 26, at 9 a.m., and Feb. 2 at 10 a.m.
The league is also looking for people in the community with baseball or softball experience who would like to become a coach or manager.
“We really encourage folks to sign up as support staff for our league,” says Asten. Anyone interested in coaching, managing or serving as an umpire is invited to the Little League fields located behind the Community Center, on Monday, Jan. 21, at 5:30 to meet some of the Board members.
“We ask that they bring along a state ID and be willing to fill out paperwork for basic background checks. All community support will be greatly appreciated!“
