Pancake Breakfast Benefits Heifer Project

NORTH FORK – The annual breakfast to benefit the Heifer Project is this Sunday, Sept. 27, at Grace Community Church in North Fork.

Sponsored by the Board of Christian Education, and orchestrated by the folks at Grace Community, this yearly pancake breakfast raises money to buy animals or trees to benefit families in poverty stricken areas around the world.

For example, “The gift of chicks from Heifer International will help provide a family in need with a starter flock of 10 to 50 chicks and training in their care. Every egg is another precious gift for a hungry child. Since a good hen can lay more than 200 eggs a year, the gift of chicks is really like giving clothing, medicine, home improvements, drinking wells and school fees,” says the Heifer catalog. The extra eggs can be sold to help with the above needs and when chicks hatch, they are given to others so they may improve their lives, too.

The list of animals is quite long – llamas, water buffaloes, rabbits, bees, goats, pigs, and of course, heifers. This is just a partial list. More information can be found at www.heifer.org.

Besides raising money, the breakfast feast serves as a way to educate people in the mountain area about the Heifer Project, which operates in emerging nations overseas and also here in the United States.

“Heifer Project is not just outside our borders, it’s inside our borders, too. We try to help people in dire straits get a better lease on life and provide better for their children,” says Sandy Chaille, moderator of the Grace Community Church, who has been involved with the Heifer Project for over a decade. She says Sunday’s breakfast is a mainstay of the church’s outreach efforts.

“Come hungry and bring a friend,” suggests Sandy. “Together we can help struggling families raise healthy kids and improve their communities.”

Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy a wonderful pancake breakfast between 8 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27. Donations for the Heifer Project are welcomed.
