Organizers Seek Volunteers for Annual ‘Avenue of Flags’ Salute

OAKHURST — The Marine Corps League in Oakhurst together with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Association will be hosting the annual Avenue of the Flags for Memorial Day (May 25) at Oakhill Cemetery.

“We are seeking veterans and their families to help us put the flags up at 7 a.m. and take them down at 16:00,” said Maryann Enciso, the organization’s public relations officer.

The event also will include a memorial service at 10 a.m. at the cemetery.

Avenue of Flags will be one of the first public events since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers say precautions will be taken to ensure the public’s safety.

“We will be practicing social distancing and will have masks,” Encisco said.

Joe Wilson of the Marine Corps League and Ralph Capone for the VFW are heading up the event.

“Our time-honored tradition is to put up the flags every Memorial Day to honor our fallen heroes,” Encisco said. “We would like to continue this tradition for the community.”
