COARSEGOLD – Elijah Johnson, 22, of Coarsegold is facing DUI charges and resisting arrest following a crash on Highway 41 in Coarsegold.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday night, Lieutenant Tyson Pogue of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office was southbound on Highway 41, just south of Road 417, when he saw a large plume of dust.As he got closer he could see that a vehicle had just crossed the center divider, and crash into a fence in front of a local Smoke Shop.
Lt. Pogue, who was off-duty, pulled into the parking lot to render assistance. The suspect showed clear signs of being under the influence of alcohol. Lt. Pogue identified himself and told the driver to stay put until uniformed officers could arrive.
Instead of complying, the suspect reportedly became combative. It took at least two deputies to take him into custody without further incident.
