Oakhurst Kids Ring Up Change For Kiwanis

OAKHURST – Students at Oakhurst Elementary School (OES) looked under car seats, checked pockets and looked everywhere they could think of this spring, and ultimately the scheme paid off: as a group, the children collected 4,040 quarters for a local Kiwanis who will donate the money to Children’s Hospital.

The spring philanthropic project for OES kids was their participation in this year’s annual “Miracle of Mile Quarters” fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Central California. Students collected quarters from April 1 – May 31.

According to school principal Kathleen Murphy, “over achievers in Ms. Kirsten Korte’s fourth grade classroom collected over 1,200 quarters and earned a pizza party!” A check for $1,010 was presented to the Sierra-Oakhurst Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, June 24, 2014.

“I am so proud of the students at OES for collecting all these quarters. It’s important they understand that giving back to the community is an important part of being a good citizen,” shared Mrs. Murphy.

“These students are awesome,” enthused Kiwanis President-Elect Harvey Left. The money will be presented to the Pediatric Trauma Unit at Children’s Hospital Central California.
