Oakhurst Community Concert Band Kicks Off Its 2019-2020 Concert Season With a Concert This Sunday

The Oakhurst Community Concert Band kicks off its 2019-2020 concert season by celebrating the holiday season on Sunday, Nov. 17, beginning at 3:00 p.m., in the Mountain Christian Center.

Admission is free for this “Jazzy Winter Concert.”

Band Director Mike Corrigan has selected music that is especially suited to this time of year, including…

C’est Noël! (It’s Christmas!) by Andre Jutras. It is based on three well-known traditional Christmas songs structured in a fast/slow/fast form. It opens with a brilliant introduction based on “Il Est Né le Divin Enfant” (He is Born The Holy Child) played by the trumpets over a rhythmic accompaniment. Then “Sainte Nuit” (Silent Night) is played softly by the brass. Finally, “Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes” (Angels We Have Heard On High) is played in a fanfare-like statement with “Joy To The World” as an upper woodwind counterpoint.

The Lion King, a collaboration between Elton John and Tim Rice, is a medley of well-known pieces including: Circle of Life, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, Hakuna Matata, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, King Of Pride Rock.

English Folk Song Suite is one of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ most famous works. It is comprised of three English Country Songs in a traditional concert band arrangement.

And The Mountains Echoed Gloria by Robert Longfield is a stirring fanfare of variations on “Angels We Have Heard on High”.

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and Fairest of the Fair are John Philip Sousa marches that continue the tradition of OCCB performing at least one military march in every concert.

Once again the OCCB Jazz Band will offer up renditions of traditional and modern jazz pieces. The concert will also feature our Yosemite High School Wind Ensemble combined with our community band in performing Martin Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium. At its core, the piece is all about Christmas, and the lyrics tell the story of Jesus’ birth.

An added attraction to the concert is a holiday presentation from members of the Golden Chain Theatre. And, there is rumor that a jolly old gentleman whose initials are S.C. will be in attendance!

This concert will be a great beginning for our Oakhurst Community’s holiday season. Be sure to enjoy this concert for children of all ages.
