Oakhurst Community Band Free Concert Celebrates America

Oakhurst Community Concert Band concert 2017

OAKHURST — Uplifting, inspirational, touching, exciting — one of the many ideal aspects of living in the foothills is access to great music of all sorts. With that in mind, the Oakhurst Community Concert Band will be performing their traditional patriotic concert, Celebrate America, on Sunday, June 24th, at Mountain Christian Center. The program starts at 3 p.m. As always, the concert is free.

“We have a varied program featuring American composers with music for every generation,” say band members. “Under the direction of Mike Corrigan our program will include American Flourish by Robert Smith,  Leroy Anderson’s The Typewriter, and a medley of familiar songs from The Wizard of Oz.

Bond . . .  James Bond takes us to the movies, and An American Elegy by Frank Ticheli, and John Mackey’s Sheltering Sky provide moments for reflection. Chaplain-Colonel Steven Eddy will again emcee our concert and we will honor all who have served in our Armed Forces with the Armed Forces Medley.

“The Jazz Band, directed by Bill Samuelson, and featuring vocalist Mary Posluch, has three Big Band favorites planned: The Lady is a Tramp, The Frim Fram Sauce, and The Nearness of You.

“And of course we have marches, directed by Pat Mierkey:  Prestissimo by Karl King, and John Philip Sousa’s The High School Cadets. Please bring a friend and  join us for our Celebrate America!”

Mountain Christian Center is located at 40299 Hwy 49 in Oakhurst.
