Oakhurst Area For Peace Plans Two Events

OAKHURST — The group Oakhurst Area for Peace is planning two events over a two-day period, and interested community members are invited to attend.

The first event is on Friday, Jan. 20 in the area of Highway 41 and Highway 49, adjacent to the old Taqueria in Oakhurst. It begins at 8:45 a.m. and includes 45 minutes of silent reflection and contemplation on the state of our Union. This gathering is open to all who care about the future of our country, say those involved, emphasizing that this is a quiet time to reflect, and requesting that there are no signs, music or other distractions.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning at 10 a.m., the group will march in solidarity with those marching in Washington, D.C. and other cities around the world on this day. The Women’s March is a grassroots effort to protect the rights and safety of women and other marginalized groups, including minorities, LGBTQ, Native people, and immigrants/refugees. All who support human rights are welcome, say organizers.

Positive message signs are encouraged, and those who are helping to facilitate the event request that participants bring their singing voices.

The march will begin at Oakhurst Community Park at 10 a.m. and then move north on Highway 41 to the Road 426 near the Rite Aid intersection, where there will be live music and shared messages. This is a pro-human rights event, bringing a positive message to our community, say members, who request that participants fashion signs and focus spirits accordingly.

Oakhurst Area for Peace began as a way for people to come together following the election of November 8, 2016, say organizers. The stated mission of Oakhurst Area for Peace is to build a community of people in the area for education and unity.
