Oak Fire Remains Active Overnight and Destroys Structures

MIDPINES — The Oak Fire started Friday, 7.22.2022, in the Midpines area of Mariposa County near Carstens Road and Highway 140.  Fire activity has been extreme with frequent runs, spot fires, and group torching. Emergency personnel are working to safely evacuate people and are actively engaged in protecting structures. We will update this article as more information is available. Update 9:00pm 7.23.2022

The Oak Fire is now 11,900 acres and 0% contained. The fire remained very active throughout the day. Ground crews, engines, strike teams, dozers and support teams continued to arrive from all parts of the state. Air and ground crews worked non stop throughout the day to protect homes and limit the progression of the fire. The Oak Fire is under joint command between Cal Fire and the Sierra National Forest(SNF). The Incident Management Team (IMT) is expected to meet with Cal Fire and SNF fire managers this evening or tomorrow morning when they take over management of the fire.

A fire advisement evacuation order was issued for the following areas at 4:53pm:
Ponderosa Basin Subdivision
This includes:
All of Chowchilla Mountain Rd and all side roads
All of Harris Cutoff Rd and all side roads
All of Harris Rd and all side roads
5S25 and 4S04
Hwy 49S from Chowchilla Mountain Rd to Harris Rd- on the Chowchilla Mountain Rd side.

*A Fire advisement is NOT an evacuation Order, it is simply to advise residents in the area of the potential need to evacuate should conditions change. Allowing those in the affected area to plan and prepare.

A community meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, 7.24.2022, at 7:00pm in the Mariposa County High School Gymnasium at 5074 Old Highway N in Mariposa.

Update 2:00pm 7.23.2022

The Oak Fire is now 9100 acres and 0% contained. Now new evacuations have been ordered since this morning. Fire crews, both ground and air, continue to prioritize structure protection and the safety of the crews and civilians in the area. Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of vital resources to suppress the blaze.

Current Situation (12:00pm 7.23.2022)

The Oak Fire has burned more than 6,555 acres.  Five residential, commercial, and other structures have been damaged and ten residential, commercial, and other structures have been destroyed. 2000 structures are threatened. 403 personnel are currently assigned to the fire including 4 helicopters, 4 dozers, 45 engines, and 4 water tenders along with multiple law enforcement officers. This is an extremely volatile incident and conditions are changing rapidly. If you are in or near an evacuation area it is highly recommended that you evacuate sooner than later. An Evacuation Center has been established at the Mariposa Elementary School located at 5044 Jones St in Mariposa.

Large Animals can be taken to the Mariposa Fair Grounds.
Small Animals can be taken to the Red Cross Shelter located at Mariposa Elementary School.
